Originally, football in American started out as Soccer (European Football). The first soccer game ever played in America was one between the Rutgers and Princeton College. Later in 1876, Walter Camp, the father of American football, helped ignite American football by writing one of the first rules of the game. The National Football League then emerged, as professional football; it has continued to grow ever since; the game has been around for over a century, it has grown from a small sport into one of the most significant sports in America.

The first teams that became professional were the Pittsburgh Steelers (former Pirates), Cardinals, Packers, Bears, and the Giants. The very first were the Cardinals that started off in Chicago and moved to St. Louis, Phoenix and finally to Arizona. They still remain a professional team and are the oldest this time around. The NFL, today, has 32 teams.

Professional football teams recruit players from colleges. Coaches scout colleges to see players who have talent and the potential to become a football player. Each teams’ yearly main goal is none other than the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl title is what defines a good professional football team; in fact, qualifying is enough to be a great team.

Back then in the early 1900’s, first professional players were paid only about $500. Today, professional players are being paid millions of dollars and millions more though advertisements and endorsements.
